Find out more about the wonderful City churches by joining with the Friends of the City Churches in a two day extravaganza looking at many of the churches within the Square Mile, some unfortunately rather difficult to access except on special occasions. This is different from some of the charity events with the City churches: this is not a route march or sponsored event! On Tuesday and Wednesday 3rd and 4th June the Friends of the City Churches has its annual City Church Walks when trained guides take parties around four or so City Churches each morning and afternoon over the 2 days. These guides are members of the City of London Guide Lecturers’ Association and know their churches inside out!
Based again this year at St Mary Aldermary at the junction of Bow Lane and Queen Victoria Street, (opposite Mansion House Tube Station) the tours will leave from St Mary Aldermary between 10.30am and 10.45am, and again at about 2pm. Lunches will be available along with hot and cold drinks to refresh you for the afternoon tours. Registration for one day is £8, and for the 2 days £12. The tours and a very helpful map are included in the registration fee. St Mary Aldermary makes an ideal centre for forays to the 4 quarters of the City, and itself is an awe inspiring church, brought up to modern standards after the completion of their tower refurbishment works. Tickets are available on the door from 10am. Even if you go on both days you will still see less than half of the City churches.
The 2 days will end with a “Fun with Gilbert and Sullivan” concert at St Sepulchre without Newgate at 4.45pm on Wednesday 4th. Andrew Earis will direct his choir singing selections from the Gilbert and Sullivan operettas, and also include one or two musical surprises! Doors open at 4pm and the concert finishes about 6pm. The £5 ticket includes a glass of wine payable at the door.
This is a major undertaking for the Friends of the City Churches and also a welcome boost to our funds for helping the City churches. Do come and join with us.
